Active Listening: Fashion Forward-The Future of Ethical Fashion
By: Mercado Global x Fyli
Join Fyli and Mercado Global Tuesday, May 18th 6-7PM EST, for a panel discussion about the ethical fashion movement and the future of fashion. As a leader in ethical fashion for fifteen years, Brooklyn-based nonprofit Mercado Global works with Indigenous women in the highlands of rural Guatemala to become artisans, providing them with trainings, materials, and sewing equipment. Through donor-funded business education and leadership programs, Mercado Global helps women create community businesses to support themselves and their families.
In a lively panel, Mercado Global and their retail partners will discuss sustainable sourcing, social responsibility, and ethical fashion initiatives. The goal of the panel is to understand ethical fashion and ensure that this movement is having a real impact and empowering the communities that produced these products.
Last summer, Fyli launched a monthly event series called Active Listening that Leads to Understanding to address social injustice, amplify diverse voices, and support under-served and marginalized communities. This event will be free and open to the public. Attendees can register on Eventbrite which will also have an option for donations to be made to selected non-profits.

MEET MERCADO GLOBAL:
Mercado Global was launched more than fifteen years ago with a mission to transform the lives of women – and their communities – making a lasting, positive impact. As an international nonprofit, they partner with Indigenous women in rural Guatemala and offer them the resources and support to become financially empowered entrepreneurs, connected to international retailers like Levi’s, Free People, and Nordstrom.
Working closely with partner artisans, they design and create handcrafted, modern fashion accessories that incorporate traditional techniques, as women work and learn together in a safe space. They receive individualized support from Mercado Global’s local teams on topics ranging from financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills, to self-love and reproductive health.
Last year, Mercado Global pivoted to incorporate high-quality, reusable face masks into their collections. This has been a lifeline for an entire region where other revenue sources have disappeared, and thanks to their supporters, they have donated 130,000 masks to date to communities in-need throughout the Americas.
